For the first month of the season we are going to concentrate on 10 ways to become a winning lacrosse team. Many of these will seem very basic and trivial to those of you who have been playing for a few years and feel that the most important skill for you to work on is your behind the back shot or pass. We will be concentrating on all of these every day in practice until they are a habit.
1.) CONTEST EVERY GROUND BALL (If we are at equal strength) WE WANT 2 MEN ON EVERY GROUND BALL WORKING THE MAN/BALL TECHNIQUE.
2.) SCOOP THROUGH GROUND BALLS WITH 2 HANDS
You can't protect and cradle with 1 hand. DON'T STOP AND RAKE- RUN THROUGH· KICK BALL IF YOU MISS IT.
3.) STEP TOWARDS EACH PASS. MOVE TO THE BALL.
The defense will have a much more difficult time covering you when you use this technique.
4.) FORCE EVERYONE WE COVER TO GO TO THEIR LEFT HAND. This defensive rule will hold to midfield especially. Once your opponent goes to his left, over play his right inside shoulder to prevent the roll back to the right.
5.) DEFENSEMEN COVERING ATTACK - DENY THE HIGH SIDE (Sticks should be pointed towards midfield). This will force the opponent to roll inside where we can set up a slide package.
6.) BACK UP ALL SHOTS! We need to keep possession. Make sure that you know when you are responsible to provide the coverage.
7.) MOVE THE BALL WHEN YOU ARE DOUBLE TEAMED.
Keep your head up and recognize the double. Get the ball to the nearest open teammate. This person should have better vision. TEAMMATES WORK TO GET OPEN AND CALL FOR THE BALL WHEN THERE IS A DOUBLE TEAM.
8.) DEFENSE MUST TALK! Constantly let each other know if a pick or cutter is coming. Let your teammate know if he has backup and where it is. Goalies must be the most vocal. IF YOU LOSE YOUR MAN SPRINT TO THE HOLE AND FIND SOMEONE TO COVER.
9.) SUSTAIN OUR RIDES - Attackmen must give a full speed effort right up to the midfield line. Middies must stay with their responsibility until the clear is finished.
10.) GIVE AND GO! When you pass to a teammate, cut to a spot where you can provide an offensive threat and look for the return pass. Don't give up the ball and cut away from the goal behind the teammate that you just passed to. This will cause a double team.
